thien has had more baths than i can count now. he still smells faintly of diesel. i've done everything the animal poison control hotline has suggested and i think he is past the danger of too much ingestion. i am still worried about him.

If it makes you feel any better--know this, despite the fact that felines are generally very sensitive to toxic chemicals, they are amazingly hearty beasts too. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to help him. Eric was right about the dishwashing liquid--it works best and is safe for a cat's skin too. i've seen many silly cats who managed to get themselves covered in nasty substances and they usually bounce back quickly if they didn't ingest any/much. Be thankful it wasn't antifreeze--ethylene glycol poisoning in cats is ugly and the poor creatures can't seem to resist licking it off of their fur! Hang in there--he'll get better. -alison-

Take the cat to the vet as soon as possible. Ours came in one day soaked in motor oil-someone dumped a bucket of the stuff on him-and even after washing his fur it was still bad, and he was very ill. The vet got the oil out, and helped him get through ingesting some of the oil.

"gypsy" is pejorative. please don't perpetuate the stereotype. educate yourself on what it really means to be a "gypsy" in this world.
