some new draft rules on everest this year, according to official permits:

No Documentary filming permits will be issued for the spring of 2008 on Mount Everest and Lhotse. so much for season 3 of Beyond the Limit.

All foreign and Nepali Climbers are permitted to climb from base camp to Camp 1, Camp 2 and Camp 3 until May 10th.

To Proceed to Camp 4 (South Col) and the Summit will only be allowed after May 10th onwards with the permission from the ministry of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation. Until then Camp 4 and the Summit climbs will be restricted.

Any rope fixing above camp 3 before May 10th is strictly restricted.

No climbing will be permitted on the mountain after 6 pm. This will not apply to rescue efforts.

There will be a climbing liaison officer based at camp 2 and camp 3 who will monitor and enforce the temporary rules and regulations. Liaison officers will report to the government of Nepal after the expedition.

Satellite phones, computers/laptops and mobile phones will be under the supervision of liaison officers. Satellite phones will be available for the use of emergency and rescue. Climbers will be allowed to communicate with their own respective satellite phone to their agents and their families at regular base, under the supervision of the liaison officer.

No Personal video Camera will be allowed to be used at base camp and above until May 10th. These items will also be under the supervision of the Liaison officer.

Press and Media will only be allowed to visit base camp with permission from the Government of Nepal. Liaison officers will have the right to inspect filming permits.
The Government of Nepal has the right to inspect all footage for censorship reasons.

soldiers will be posted at base camp and camp 2.

there were traffic jams last year and i just think this year is going to be quite dangerous with everyone going up the south side and possibly result in a season worse that 96. climbers having to get new permits and then rushing won't have time to acclimatize properly. if china doesn't make their summit date (not many do), it will delay the teams further or stop them all together. there isn't much of a window after may 10 for a summit bid....

the China Tibet Mountaineering Association issued a notice about the closing because of "concern of heavy climbing activities, crowded climbing routes and increasing environmental pressures will cause potential safety problems."

bah....

tibetan activists will be a thorn in their pretty torch bearing sides. they've issued a "request" to nepal to keep an eye out for pro-tibet protestors.

isn't it ironic that the carrying of a torch to represent sportsmanship is limiting, and putting in danger, athletes from around the world?

i believe mt. everest shouldn't belong to anyone.

so....who to watch this season?

The Kazakh National Team - plan to make the first traverse of lhotse and everest by ascent to lhotse from the south, down the south col and then ascent to everest. once they climb lhotse, the team will have climbed all the highest mountains in the world.

Daniela Teixeira - of portugal plans to be the seventh woman to summit without oxygen.

Min Bahadur Sherchan - 77 years old, from Nepal, will be the oldest if he makes the bid.

First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Experdition, from nepal, not only exclusively a female team, but will employ only women too!

The Singapore Women's Everest Team - they have a great website!

Team Mallory - an entire canadian family...mom, dad, two sons and a daughter. go team!

Andrew Brash - at it again after giving up his bid to rescue the presumed dead Lincoln Hall in 06

Alan Arnette - the road back to everest for alzheimer's. i've followed Alan for years and i know he will make it this year!

good luck to all, may the goddess Chomolungma smile upon you :)

I so enjoy your Mt. Everest updates. I didn't learn enough about mountain climbing to become interested in it until I was in my late 30's. Maybe in my next life, I'll be a climber. :)

With her base camp established in the valley of vegan, she ascended thought plains of Paz using the same route the Marquis advocated until she reached the Taylor plateau. Ascent continues, video at 10.

"gypsy" is pejorative. please don't perpetuate the stereotype. educate yourself on what it really means to be a "gypsy" in this world.
