Dare I hope you're being sardonic? I'm not sure a world in which children were beaten, bullying was tolerated and children with ADHD went without meds and ESL children could not receive extra help learning English was truly such a paradise...maybe it's just me.

some sad
some extremes
some not

just some changes of the time.

the last one really hit me....at work insurance discouraged hugging or even touching a child. tell me that one isn't just pitiful.

and i do think kids are sometimes too quickly diagnosed with ADD and given meds.

Well, I agree that not being able to give hugs is ridiculous. It's worse for me as a man-in certain settings I've had to leave the door open while working with female clients to protect myself against allegations of sexual misconduct.

As for children being given meds too frequently-sure. Blame the uninvolved and inconsistent parents, or the overcrowding in the schools if you like, but remember that plenty of children were also given beatings too frequently. And consider for a moment a child who really does have adhd being beaten on a daily basis because he can't sit still. I've worked with a lot of principals in my time-most of them I wouldn't trust with anything more dangerous than string. I certainly wouldn't trust them with the discretionary power to mete out violence to children.

my son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was nine. it was real. i was a young, single mother. i thought all boys bounced off the walls and ran their mother's ragged (we had only girls in my family). i felt terribly guilty for all the times i had scolded him over little things (i NEVER hit him....don't believe in that). he had been in gifted classes, but the schools said he had to be 1) on meds and 2) in special "ADD classes". i took him out of school and homeschooled him. if he wanted to bounce off the walls between lessons he could. if he wanted to chat and squirm and roll a pencil around he could, without detention, demerits or discouragement. we didn't use meds, but we did work with it and not against it. he is now a junior in college with a 4.0....
i don't trust the schools either. i went to catholic school and i am just old enough to recall rulers and paddles.
but then again, i liked it ;)

"gypsy" is pejorative. please don't perpetuate the stereotype. educate yourself on what it really means to be a "gypsy" in this world.
